Tailgate Season: The Gameday Playbook
Share
College football tailgating is the only drinking marathon that starts before breakfast and calls itself a sport. Parking lots open at dawn, the game is at 3:30, and the winner is whoever's still standing for the fourth quarter. Here's the gameday playbook.
TL;DR
- A noon kickoff means a 7am tailgate — that's a 10+ hour drinking day
- The enemies: sun, an all-day pace, and the "we've been here since dawn" logic
- Grill food isn't a snack — it's the entire defensive line
- Survive to the fourth quarter, then survive the drive to next Saturday
The Tailgate Problem
Tailgating breaks the normal rules of drinking by starting at an hour when most people are still asleep. Lots open five or six hours before kickoff, the beer starts flowing with the sunrise, and by the time you're actually in your seats you've already put in a full day's session. Then there's the stadium beers, the post-game celebration (or the post-game grief drinking, depending on the score), and — because this is a season, not an event — the whole thing repeats next Saturday. It's a marathon that masquerades as a party, with all the sun-and-pace hazards of a boat day but longer.
The Gameday Protocol
- Eat like it's your job, all day. The tailgate grill is the single best hangover-prevention tool available — protein and fat slow everything down. Burgers, brats, wings: defensive coordinators.
- Pace for the fourth quarter. The person who's peaking at 10am is a liability by kickoff. Slow the dawn hours; you've got all day.
- Water is the MVP. A cooler of water next to the cooler of beer. Alternate. The sun in an open lot is relentless.
- Beer math is real. A dawn-to-dark session of "just beers" adds up to a serious night — the low-and-slow trap is exactly how tailgates end early.
- Respect the season. It's not one Saturday, it's twelve. Treat each one as a multi-day-adjacent event and recover between them.
Home Game vs. Road Trip
Home games are survivable — you're near your own bed and can pace toward a normal Sunday. Road trips and bowl games are a different animal: travel, unfamiliar bars, and a multi-night structure that turns the weekend into a bachelor-party-grade event with a football game bolted on. Pack accordingly.
The UNHUNG Angle
A 10-hour sun-and-beer gameday is the double-tax scenario UNHUNG was built for. One 3.4oz shot at the end of the day (500mg DHM, NAC, milk thistle, electrolytes), and Sunday is for watching the other games instead of recovering from yours. The full gameday breakdown lives on the tailgate page.
