Desert playa at dusk with a lone figure and art bike - Burning Man recovery

Burning Man Week: The Recovery Protocol

Burning Man is the most extreme recovery environment on the festival calendar: a week in an alkaline desert with no cell service, no vendors, and no bailout. Radical self-reliance is the whole ethos — which means your recovery plan has to be packed before you leave pavement.

TL;DR

  • The playa is alkaline dust + extreme heat + high altitude — dehydration on hard mode
  • No commerce means everything you need, you pack — including recovery
  • Electrolytes aren't optional here; plain water alone can leave you worse off
  • This is a survival guide, not a party guide — respect the environment first

Why the Playa Is Different

Every other festival on this site has a bailout: a vendor, a hotel, a rideshare home. Black Rock City has none of that. You're in a high-altitude alkaline lakebed where daytime heat is brutal, nights turn cold, the dust is caustic enough to crack your skin, and the nearest store is hours away on a single choked road. The environment alone dehydrates you hard before alcohol enters the equation — and out here, the electrolyte math actually matters, because chugging plain water in that heat without replacing minerals can leave you feeling worse, not better.

The Radical Self-Reliance Packing List

  • Way more water than you think. The commonly cited baseline is around 1.5 gallons per person per day for drinking and washing. Plan up, not down.
  • Electrolytes, daily and non-negotiable. Sodium, potassium, magnesium — the playa sweats them out of you faster than you'll notice.
  • Recovery support, pre-packed. Nothing is for sale. Whatever you want for the mornings, it rides in with you or it doesn't exist.
  • Real food and shade. Structured meals and a break from the sun are recovery infrastructure, not luxuries.
  • The whole kit, doubled. The general festival recovery kit applies — just assume you can't restock any of it.

Pace for a Week, Not a Weekend

A week on the playa is the ultimate multi-day event, and the multi-day doctrine goes double: the person who goes 100% on night one doesn't make it to the Temple burn. Hydrate constantly, protect your sleep in a tent that becomes an oven at sunrise (eye mask, earplugs, shade structure), and treat each morning's recovery as the thing that buys you the next day. The desert does not offer refunds.

The UNHUNG Angle

UNHUNG is built for exactly this pack-it-in reality: sealed, shelf-stable 3.4oz shots that survive a dusty week in a bin, with electrolytes for the playa and DHM plus NAC for the nights. Pack one per night you plan to drink, because there is no restock and no rescue. Provision before pavement ends. (And drink responsibly — the playa punishes overconfidence harder than any city.)
