Coachella 2026 Weekend 1 Recap: chaos, cameos, and desert filth

Coachella Weekend 1 was horny, dusty, expensive, and somehow still worth it. If your group chat went silent for 72 hours, this is why.

The desert gave us three headliners with totally different energy and a stupid amount of surprise guests. Rolling Stone’s weekend rundown hit a lot of the big music moments, but the short version is this: Sabrina Carpenter turned her Friday headline set into a weird little Hollywood fever dream, Justin Bieber pulled the internet back into Bieber Fever on Saturday, and Karol G closed Sunday by becoming the first Latina to headline Coachella. Casual.

The sets people actually talked about

Sabrina Carpenter headlined Friday and kept the singing guests offstage, which honestly made the whole thing hit harder. Instead, she stacked the set with cameos from Sam Elliott, Susan Sarandon, Corey Fogelmanis, and Will Ferrell playing a repairman when the stage lights “broke.” It was campy, overcooked, and very online. The clips were everywhere before people even got back to their cars.

Bieber did the nostalgia flex

Saturday belonged to Justin Bieber, who brought out The Kid LAROI for “Stay,” then kept going with Dijon, Tems, and Wizkid. Add in Geese randomly covering “Baby” earlier in the day and the whole festival felt like it got dragged back into 2010 against its will. Even people pretending they were too cool for Bieber were still singing.

Karol G got the history-book slot

Sunday night was Karol G’s. She became the first Latina to headline Coachella and showed up with scale: a massive stone-cave set, “TQG,” “Amargura,” Mariah Angeliq on “El Makinon,” Becky G on “Mamiii,” and a long run with Wisin. She also told the crowd to feel proud and raise their flags. That one landed. You could feel it on the field.

Away from the headliners, the “you had to be there” list got long fast. Teddy Swims won the dad-rock cameo Olympics with Joe Jonas, Vanessa Carlton, and David Lee Roth. KATSEYE brought out EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami for a “Golden” moment tied to Desert Sun’s guest tracker. Addison Rae pulled out Maddie Ziegler. Sombr brought Billy Corgan in for “1979.” Major Lazer brought out M.I.A. for “Paper Planes.” PinkPantheress had The Dare, horsegiirL, and Thundercat in her orbit. This festival really said, “What if everyone had a plus-one?”

The side quests were almost better

Weekend 1 wasn’t just main-stage business. The party circuit was doing the most. Vogue’s party roundup clocked the 818 Outpost as one of the busiest day parties, with Kaytranada on deck, Justine Skye jumping in, and Lizzo making an impromptu appearance. Parívie Oasis had Paris Hilton hosting and Lizzo dancing again, because apparently she was booked and busy across the entire valley. Revolve Festival pulled Don Toliver, Mustard, and Kehlani. Neon Carnival got its annual late-night stampede. If your fit survived all that, respect.

Do LaB got messy

The cleanest summary of Do LaB is: amazing until it wasn’t. John Summit’s surprise set on Friday pulled a huge crowd, then reports said a light fell and injured an attendee, which led to a closure for the rest of the night. High winds also wrecked plans for Anyma’s Friday set, and he ended up appearing at Do LaB on Sunday instead. Peak festival logic. Nothing is real, check the app again.

Fashion was less boho fairy, more hot-person-on-purpose

This year’s uniform was sharper than the old flower-crown era. Who What Wear spotted skullcaps, low-rise denim, suede fringe boots, ponchos, hot pants, thick belts, and bikini tops worn as actual shirts. Harper’s Bazaar also called out the usual Coachella DNA, like worn-in denim and Western touches, but Weekend 1 felt cleaner and sexier. Less “music festival on Pinterest.” More “I have a driver waiting.”

So that was the first desert lap: Sabrina doing theater-kid chaos, Bieber doing redemption-core, Karol G making history, and the rest of the lineup treating surprise guests like a competitive sport. Weekend 2 has a lot to live up to. If you survived Weekend 1, hydrate, flirt responsibly, and next time, maybe bring UNHUNG.
